The LEDStar XL Spotlight is our first product to be assessed to the CIBSE TM65 and TM66 guidelines for Embedded Carbon and Circular Economy. This raised some enquiries about the standard so we thought we’d explain a little more about it.
TM65 has been with us for a while now and is a strong framework for calculating the carbon required to operate the product over a set lifetime of 25 years.
TM66 builds on this foundation and takes the initiative much further. It was created by CIBSE and the Society of Light and Lighting with guidelines requiring manufacturers to ensure that product designs allow for simple maintenance, repair, end-of-life upgrade and disassembly to individual material types for ease of recycling. It uses an algorithm that looks at various aspects of design and manufacture to provide a numeric assessment of a product’s economic sustainability and compliance with circular economy principles.
Scores are weighted on the materials that the product uses, where they travel from and the impact they have on production in a circular way. Furthermore it is not a set score, the idea is that companies continually re-assess their products and keep improving them over time to get a better score.
The new algorithm is the result of a cross-industry collaboration and a willingness to provide practical guidance and tools to help develop a circular, sustainable approach to lighting and building services engineering more broadly.
As part of our mantra of Repair, Recycle or Reuse, we are embracing the concept and has committed that its products adhere to this simple but important philosophy. We all know that being mindful of our carbon footprint is more important than ever. To do this, we need to consider the full life cycle of the product, all the way from raw materials to manufacture to end-of-life. We all need to reduce waste as much as possible. The longer the product’s life, the less we throw away and the less waste we generate. Thanks to our product design, our luminaries use the most current and efficient LEDs. In addition, they can be repaired and upgraded to accommodate the latest innovations as they arrive, allowing our luminaries to be used for decades.
